A "pinpillow embrodred" was among the New Year's gifts presented to Queen Elizabeth I in 1562. As receptacles for costly pins, every lady's wardrobe had at least one. Young women embroidered pincushions for themselves and as gifts. In this spirit Sharon Cohen presents an "English Pynpillowe". Its design was inspired by those of 17th century English crewel embroideries, featuring Jacobean flowers, birds, and insects.
