In seventeenth century England, women and girls often kept in their embroidery work-boxes a length of linen on which they recorded patterns and motifs that appealed to their fancy. Throughout the needlewoman's life, this sampler may have been further stitched upon, referred to for embroidery designs, and, when not in use, kept carefully rolled up and placed safely away in her work-box.
The Random Motif Sampler presented here is representative of those long ago samplers. The motifs used are all adapted from antique samplers, and it employs many of the same stitches used in the 17th century.
This sampler is recommended for the intermediate to advanced needleworker.
