English Bird Sampler
The needlework education of young girls often began with a long narrow band sampler. The student began with bands of surace embroidery using colorul silks. After mastering these stitches, she continued her sampler employing the more difficult techniques of drawn-work and cut-work.
"English Bird Sampler" uses many of the techniques present on the samplers of long ago. The top half is stiched with colorful flosses employing twenty different stitches; the bottom is stitched with cream- colored silks and pearl cotton using a variety of whitwork techniques including drawn-work and cut-work. Nearly thirty stitches and techniques are taught in this sampler.
